What are unfinished wood floors? Unfinished or site-finish hardwood floors are hardwood surfaces that don't have a top layer coating over the wooden surface before the installation. Unlike unfinished hard wood floors, pre-finished hardwood floors are coated on the top to seal the floor. Unfinished wooden floorings have existed much longer than the pre-finished wooden flooring. While pre-finished wood flooring are very more common today, unfinished hardwood flooring has been coming round again in appreciation.

If you select to go with an unfinished wood floor, you have the option to get an unfinished solid or an unfinished engineered hard wood floor. It is a good idea to go for an unfinished engineered floor; the reason behind it is that you can maintain a consistency all around your house. Unfinished designed floors can be found in a wide range of domestic and exotic wood species - Ash, Cherry, Birch, Hickory, Maple, Red and White Oak, Walnut, and Pecan. All these species look lovely if left as they are, or with deep pigments to intensify their personality lines.

A benefit of unfinished wood floors is you can make sure there's a level of continuity in the floor. Everything will be applied to the entire floor, instead of fitting individual panels that were finished separately and hoping the finish was applied at consistent enough levels that all the panels match completely. Another advantage of unfinished wood panels can be seen when you're putting a hardwood surface in a building that already has hardwood surfaces. It may just be very unlikely to find a pre-finished floor that comes near to matching the other floors in the building. But it's not so hard to find wood grain that matches in an unfinished floor and add finish to copy the first finish color and gloss. One more advantage of unfinished floors is they are rather more stable because they are fit together and sanded after placement. Pre-finished floors can't be this stable as the individual panels are finished separately.
